do you need a data protection officer?

A Data Protection Officer (DPO) is a new job role described in the GDPR, they are the person in charge of keeping a company GDPR compliant.

They will monitor the processing of personal data, monitor security systems in place, giving advice on improvements that could be made and advice on any new processes and systems being implemented. The following types of companies need to employ a DPO:

  • Public authorities

  • Any company which does large scale monitoring or profiling

  • Any company that has sensitive data as the core of its operations

But have a think. Just because you don’t need a DPO doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea. If you don’t feel you need a DPO then think about designating an individual or team in charge of compliance instead.
